How to sell Texas Longhorn Cattle for profit: 5 basic tips.
We often get calls from ranchers looking to sell at least some Texas Longhorn cattle.

It’s not that complicated to sell Texas Longhorn cattle. Take a good picture, join a Facebook group, consign to an auction, or post a social media story and hope for the best. Sometimes that’s all it takes. However, it’s not always enough, and selling Texas Longhorns for a profit is a challenge not everybody masters. Especially when an initial purchase is a high-dollar longhorn cow, because then the stakes go up, or should we say, the steaks go up – no, that’s bad. Let’s stick to the script, shall we…….

6 months ago, we stated the obvious in an article How to Market Texas Longhorn Successfully.
Here, we summarize that post and add three additional points.
Previously, we focused on two simple points that are so basic, they are often overlooked and brushed off as rudimentary.
-
1. A Website

2. A Strategy to sell your Texas Longhorn Cattle
A website is important because it is a visit to your ranch, before anyone gets in the car.
It is the first chance for potential customers to see information about you, your Texas Longhorn cattle, and the information they need to make their purchase.
Ask yourself this question. How many products do I buy online from a company that does not have a website?
If you already have a website, is your website AI-friendly?
It looks like AI is here to stay, and a content-driven website will help and is most certainly a start in building your AI profile.

A strategy to announce that you have a website is as important as the website itself. Customers have to find you. They have to find your website.
Implementing a strategy is when things get tricky. Everybody’s strategy is different. However, master this, and you will gain a competitive advantage.
In our experience, our strategy did not depend on how much money we spent. We did not spend much. On the contrary, we did invest in time.

3. Social Media
Social Media is an obvious starting point to announce yourself, your website, and your brand.
We all know something about Social Media, right? In fact, you may know more than us. What seems to be common knowledge is that the more accounts we have across the board, the better.
What many don’t realize, though, is that these accounts rarely close the deal. In other words, Social Media is important for Brand Exposure but not necessarily the best tool for reeling in the customer who wants to buy a Texas Longhorn cow.
What we do on Social Media is necessary, but seldom enough to guarantee that all our Texas Longhorn cattle will sell, and sell for a profit to good homes.
The graph below is based on our real data.

The above Google Analytics graph highlights useful information, as follows:-
- According to Google, Organic Search traffic refers to visitors who have clicked on GVRlonghorns.com in a “natural search” as opposed to being directed to the website by an advertisement.
- Social media consultants point out that high organic search results often indicate a high return on investment (ROI) because this traffic consists of targeted, high-intent users. In this graph, GVRlonghorns has a score of 76%.
- On the other hand, Organic Social refers to traffic from Social Media without paid advertisements. During this snapshot period, some of our videos were viewed over 1 million times. Even so, only 2% of our customers came from Social Media. If you get good coverage from Social Media, just think what you can do with a website.
-
High Organic Traffic websites like GVRlonghorns.com have a large volume of visitors from unpaid search engine results.
- If you think of it, ORGANIC SEARCH = FREE CUSTOMERS!!

4. Leverage
GVRlonghorns.com matches what people search for when they search for Texas Longhorn cattle for sale. If you want your website to do the same, there are many avenues to exploit, ranging from podcasts to branded merchandise to how-to guides and local listings. We use a content-driven strategy as our leverage and focus on valuable, relevant information.
- Our website traffic skyrocketed when we launched our Texas Longhorn Cattle Blog in April of 2018. Even though technology has changed since then, we are still invested in our blog to boost and maintain our website traffic. In fact, we believe blogging may be more important now than ever. 8 years ago, we did not think anyone would read our blog. If you think the same way, you may want to read our article in the April 2026 Edition of Texas Longhorn Trails, The Importance of Blogging in the Age of AI, p. 18. The data to support blogging is astounding, to say the least.
- Hired Hands software is also a great leverage tool in the Texas Longhorn Cattle industry. Several websites use the software, but many don’t optimize it to its full potential. Some tips are mentioned in the next section.
-
5. Optimization
There are many ways to optimize a website.
The easiest way is to advertise, but of course, it can get costly.
It’s important to stay ahead of the algorithms, and research definitely pays off.
Google Analytics is great for measuring progress, so be sure to sign up.
The technical term for optimizing a website is Search Engine Optimization or SEO.
Some areas to focus on include:-
- Keywords – targeting keywords in the Texas Longhorn Cattle industry will help to gain rankings and traffic. A simple AI search will provide a host of keywords to focus on.
- Backlinks – a backlink is a vote of confidence. It is a link from another website that directs to your website.
- Internal links – these links are from one page on your website to another
- Videos – videos help attract traffic as long as they are relevant, good quality, and audible. Be sure to use music that is not licensed.
- Photos – photos should be good quality too, even when the image size is reduced.
In conclusion
Every week, we answer a call or two from a rancher looking to sell Texas Longhorn Cattle. 9 times out of 10, these ranchers do not have a website. The one rancher who does have a website often sells longhorns on consignment, and even with a website, this platform is not their marketing focus. Having sold on consignment, we can say that luckily our baseline prices were realised, so our auction costs were covered with profit. This is not always the case for everyone at auction, and selling or selling for profit is not guaranteed. On the other hand, we have been guaranteed to sell out with profit every year, and often within the first 4 months of the year, through our website. In fact, not only do we sell all our Texas Longhorn cattle on the SALEBARN page, but we also have the opportunity to interview our prospective customers. If we have reservations, we don’t have to sell. As a final thought,
AI is gaining momentum faster than ever. Considering how to jump on this trend is imperative for businesses to sell their products and commodities, even if they are Texas Longhorn Cattle .
